Trump threatens 50% tariffs on countries that supply Iran with weapons
President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 50 percent tariffs on imports from countries supplying Iran with military weapons, with no exemptions, announcing the threat in a social media post just hours after agreeing to a two-week ceasefire with Tehran. Trump did not specify the legal authority he would use, as the Supreme Court in February struck down his use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose broad global tariffs, prompting a lower court to order refunds of some $166 billion collected over a year.
The threat is seen as legally uncertain due to recent court rulings. Rachel Ziemba, an adjunct senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security, noted that there is no immediate policy lever available to the US to enforce such tariffs post-IEEPA strike. Trump did not name specific countries that could face tariffs, but China and Russia have historically supplied Iran with weapons, including missiles and air defense systems, to bolster its deterrence capabilities.
China’s involvement in supplying Iran with advanced technology, such as semiconductor tools, has been reported, though recent denials from Beijing and Moscow persist. The US tariffs on Chinese products have decreased since the court ruling, and Trump’s planned trip to Beijing in May may deter immediate action. Alternative tariff tools like Section 301 and Section 232 could be used, but they require lengthy investigations and public notice periods.
Russia remains a source of arms technology for Iran, though US imports from Russia have declined sharply due to sanctions following the 2022 invasion. The US Department of Commerce is moving to impose tariffs on Russian palladium, a key input for automotive and fertilizer industries.
