Stephanie Hsu Does the Time Warp
The actress Stephanie Hsu, known as a ‘soft witch,’ describes her intuition as sometimes off. She had a vision last year that she would be cast in the Broadway hit ‘Oh, Mary!’ as Abraham Lincoln. The next day, she received a call from Sam Pinkleton, the show’s director, who offered her the role of Janet in the new Broadway revival of ‘The Rocky Horror Show.’ Hsu, who is 35, had never seen the 1975 cult film adaptation but watched it the night Pinkleton called and signed on. The story follows Brad and Janet, who encounter Dr. Frank-N-Furter and a colorful gang in a castle. Hsu, who plays Janet, described her transformation as shocking and deeply personal. She returned to Broadway after roles in ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’ musical, TV work, and the Oscar-nominated film ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once.’ Hsu relocated to the West Coast after earning an Oscar nomination but moved back to Manhattan after Trump’s second election. During rehearsals at Studio 54, she shared anecdotes about the venue’s history, including a séance with cast members and hints about Easter eggs in the set. She also mentioned Richard O’Brien’s view of ‘Rocky Horror Show’ as a ‘trashy little musical.’
