Trump’s 2027 budget would cut billions from clean energy and climate programs while boosting military spending
The Trump administration on Friday unveiled its 2027 budget proposal, a wish list of changes—primarily cuts—to be enacted by Congress. The biggest news is a record $1.5-trillion defense budget. However, deeper cuts target climate and environmental programs, including:
1. **Clean Energy Programs**: Over $15 billion in Department of Energy funds for unreliable renewable energy, carbon removal, and costly technologies are proposed for cancellation. The budget redirects $4.7 billion from President Biden’s Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act toward firm baseload power (non-renewable) and cuts $1.1 billion from the Energy Department’s Office of Science. It also ends subsidies for electric vehicle battery manufacturers and eliminates $4 billion in Department of Transportation funds for EV charger programs. Additionally, it cancels the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.
2. **Environmental Protection**: The Environmental Protection Agency’s budget is cut nearly in half, eliminating funding for Superfund, drinking water programs, and environmental justice efforts. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s budget is slashed by $1.6 billion, targeting climate research and educational grants.
3. **Forest Service**: The budget shifts the agency’s focus from conservation to domestic timber production and wildfire risk mitigation, reversing recent conservation efforts. It also opens 112.5 million acres of national forestland to logging, including all 18 of California’s national forests.
4. **Climate Science**: The proposal dismantles the National Center for Atmospheric Research and cuts funding for the sixth National Climate Assessment, undermining climate research.
The administration argues these changes align with its goal of reducing globalist climate policies and promoting American energy production. Critics, including Democrats and environmental groups, oppose the cuts, warning they threaten weather forecasting, scientific leadership, and public health. Congress will now debate the proposal, with final spending levels expected later this year.
