‘Weapons’ Prequel ‘Gladys’ Adds Zach Shields as Co-Writer With Zach Cregger
As “Weapons” breakout character Aunt Gladys’ story continues with a highly-anticipated prequel movie, Zach Shields (“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”) has been tapped to co-write the screenplay alongside filmmaker Zach Cregger. The working title for the New Line and Warner Bros. movie is “Gladys,” developed following the film’s success, grossing $270 million worldwide and earning Amy Madigan an Oscar for her role as the deranged Aunt Gladys. Madigan also won SAG-AFTRA’s Actor Award and Critics Choice Award for supporting actress and was nominated for a Golden Globe. At the Oscars, she expressed excitement about reprising her role, emphasizing patience in the film industry. The storyline for the prequel remains unspecified, but backstory elements—such as Gladys’ transformation into a parasitic witch—are anticipated. The Oscar win highlights the growing recognition of horror in the industry, with horror films contributing significantly to box office revenue. New Line Cinema has three billion-dollar horror franchises: “The Conjuring” ($2.8 billion), “It” ($1.2 billion), and “Final Destination” ($1 billion). Zach Cregger, known for “Resident Evil,” and Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon are producing the film. Zach Shields’ hiring continues his long-term association with Warner Bros., following his work on Godzilla and Kong projects, including “Godzilla vs. Kong” and “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” as well as Universal’s “Krampus.” In television, Shields co-executive produced “Lady in the Lake” for Apple TV. Zach Cregger is represented by CAA, Artists First, and Karl Austen, while Zach Shields is represented by Range Media Partners and Hirsch Wallerstein Hayum Matlof and Fishman.
